On Tuesday, August 30, a group of first responders, concerned citizens and local organizations sponsored a National Night Out on the grounds of the Town Hall in Society Hill. The community was provided with cold drinks, hotdogs, hamburgers, face painting, candy, treats and educational literature. There was also a display of “Fatal Vision” goggles. This is special eyewear which show just how the intake of alcohol impairs your vision.

A police cruiser was on hand, allowing visitors to experience the sirens and flashing lights. An ambulance and fire truck were also on display for the public to view.

Explaining the importance of police and community interaction, Chief Renea Worden of the Society Police Dept. said, “We’re glad we can do this kind of thing. It’s really so good for the community and law enforcement.”

National Night Out is a national community-building campaign which promotes police-community partnerships, allowing people to rediscover their communities. The National Night Out events enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of a close-knit community. It also provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Those involved in this year’s event were the Society Hill Police Dept., Pee Dee Coalition, Welsh Neck Baptist Church, the Church of God, the Lions Club, Raceway Grill, Rosenwald Elementary School, Society Hill Rescue Squad, Society Hill Fire Dept., Jeffrey Ronders and Hailey Zink.
