Our Town | Greer

Incorporated in 1876 and located across Greenville and Spartanburg counties, the City of Greer has grown from a cotton town into an industrial center of the Palmetto State. Greer is adjacent to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport and home to the South Carolina Inland Port. Greer is also the site for the largest BMW manufacturing facility in North America. Over 40 international firms from 12 different countries are located in Greer, including Michelin from France and Mitsubishi Chemical from Japan. 

In this Our Town story, Greer Mayor Richard Danner described the city’s unprecedented industrial and commercial growth, including the construction and opening of the South Carolina Inland Port, the City of Greer Municipal Complex, and the downtown revitalization. James Carter, the owner of Empire Limited Haberdashery & Tuxedos, shared with us his experience operating a business in the center of downtown Greer, including his involvement as a business owner in the downtown revitalization process, as well as his contribution to the community. Director of Greer Farmers Market Jessica Monroe introduced the various products and the fun events at the market and expressed her appreciation for the support the Farmers Market received from the city government. Caroline Robertson, Executive Director of Greer Relief spoke about the services her agency provides in helping neighbors in need and assisting them in ending their crises. Everyone is proud of Greer, a city one could enjoy big town amenities, yet at the same time experience a small town homey feel.

“I think the most exciting thing to me about Greer is its future,” Mayor Danner pointed out. The city government and its residents believe that Greer has had significant growth since 1990, and as the city continues to grow, they are creating a community together with people who choose here to live, work and raise their family, and are proud of the choice they have made.
