MARION, S.C. − Marion Swamp Foxes defensive lineman Draquan Pearson announced his intention to play football at South Carolina State University Friday.
Pearson played with his brothers; junior offensive lineman Dreliek Pearson and freshman linebacker Dramere Pearson, helping the program earn two region championships, a lower state title and a Class 2A state runner-up finish.
“It felt to good celebrate,” Draquan Pearson said. “This is a lifetime moment. I’m the first in my family to do this. Hopefully, I pave a way for me and my brothers.”
Pearson said he took his time with the decision.
“I felt it was a really good school and I love the coaches,” he said. “It felt like home.”
Pearson said he feels he will be a great fit after four-years of varsity of experience. His biggest influences are a family filled with multiple football players and has trained under his father Draper Pearson.
“My uncles Bizzy, Theodore, Trap, Cory and Lorenzo have all been a big help to me and I thank them,” he said. “I also want to thank my father for restoring the football blood in me.”
Draper Pearson said he was happy to share the moment with his son.
“It’s a great moment to be shared,” he said. “They’re getting a great player. He’s humble and he’s ready. As a defensive player he is a great guy and coachable kid.”
Draper Pearson said the experience has help to give his brothers confidence.
“It’s amazing to see them all the field and I thank God for it everyday,” he said. “It’s something my dad did for me growing up by standing behind my back and I had to stand behind their back.”
Dreliek said he played with his brother since youth football.
“It’s amazing to play with because he is a good ball player,” he said. “He inspires us everyday and every time he steps out on the field. He helps us get better and that’s how it’s always been.”
Dramere said he had a great time playing varsity football with his older brother.
Pearson said it was fun playing for the Swamp Foxes and his brothers.
“It was the best feeling in my life,” he said. “I’m just glad I got so spend one year with them. I love my little brother Dreliek and push him to be the best lineman he can be.”
Pearson said he plans to be a Business major with aspirations to start his own trucking business.
“It was great and I wish we could’ve gone out on a different note but I loved every game,” he said. “We had a great senior season.”
Swamp Foxes coach Brian Hennecy said he enjoyed coaching and spending time with the family.
“I think they’re a product of their dad who is one of our coaches,” he said. “They want to win and be successful and it transfers over to the football field.”
Hennecy said Pearson will do well for the Bulldogs.
“He was exceptional on the defensive line for us,” he said. “He was one of our leaders the past two years. My best memory of him was having one carry for 17 yards rushing in the first game. I should’ve got him the ball more.”
