CONWAY — The Horry Telephone Cooperative board of directors has selected a top inside executive to lead the 70-year-old utility, just as it announced the upcoming retirement of its current chief executive officer.
Chief Operating Officer Carlton Lewis will take over as CEO from Mike Hagg, who is retiring before the end of the year after 28 years at the telecommunications cooperative, including 12 years at the helm.
HTC serves more than 100,000 customers across Georgetown, Horry and Marion counties.
“Mike has been a dedicated and talented leader of HTC during his 28 years of service,” said Charles Whaley, president of the board, in a statement. “His leadership ability and overall work ethic is evident to those who have worked with him. We, as a cooperative, have been very fortunate to have Mike shepherd us through such a tremendous growth phase and are very appreciative of his dedication and commitment to HTC.”
Previously, Hagg was chief operating officer for the utility before being named CEO in 2010. He served in several different positions and departments since starting at the cooperative in 1994.
“I am very thankful for my time at HTC and will remember it fondly as I move to the next chapter of my life,” Hagg said. “As I leave, I am confident HTC is in a position to not only be a leader when it comes to the telecommunications space, but also when it comes to helping our communities grow and prosper.
“I’m thankful to each and every HTC member, employee and partner for allowing me to serve such a great organization over the last 28 years.”
An Aynor native, upcoming CEO Lewis is a 24-year HTC employee and previously served as chief financial officer for eight years.
“We have great confidence in Carlton’s leadership,” Whaley said. “His talent and interpersonal qualities, as well as his experience and knowledge of the telecommunications industry will allow for a seamless transition.
“His vision will set the stage for what we believe will be continued growth and prosperity for HTC.”
