FLORENCE, S.C. (WMBF) – The Florence County coroner identified the two people involved in a deadly shooting at the Sedgefield Apartments in Florence.
Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the victim as 47-year-old Tamika McGray, who he said died from multiple gunshot wounds.
One mother, who didn’t want to identify herself, said her Ring camera captured the gunshots being fired just a couple of feet away from her. The video showed the mother carrying a small child, while her other child hid behind her legs after hearing the gunshots.
“I saw through my staircase, him shooting but I never saw what he was shooting at, and he just walked inside his apartment complex as if nothing happened,” she said.
Florence police arrived at the apartment complex on Valparaiso Drive around 7 p.m. where they found McGray had been shot and killed. Officer then learned that the suspected gunman had barricaded himself in another apartment unit.
The Florence Department’s Emergency Response Team and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team were called to the scene to try and get the suspect out of the apartment. The law enforcement agencies also evacuated neighbors from the building.
“They evacuated everybody and then we went to the front and that’s when they (police) threw tear gas,” the mother said.
Officers later discovered the body of the gunman inside the apartment. The coroner identified as 50-year-old Jerome Mouzone. Von Lutcken said that Mouzone took his own life.
WMBF News spoke with a family member and they said the two were married and had several kids.
This incident is under investigation by the Florence Police Department and the Florence County Coroner’s office.
